Apprenticeship Promising Practices: Growing and Diversifying the Pipeline of Apprentices
In 2016, DOL provided State Apprenticeship Expansion (SAE) grants to 36 states and 1 territory to grow apprenticeship. Grantees are using funds in three critical ways:
- To deepen business engagement
- To build and diversify the pipeline of apprentices
- To integrate apprenticeship into states’ broader workforce development, economic development, and educational systems.
This Resource Page showcases innovative strategies to build and diversify the pipeline of apprentices – particularly among under-represented populations – from Alaska, Iowa, and Ohio.
- Alaska – Partnered with a health care intermediary to expand apprenticeship access in rural areas, especially with native populations, using distance learning and distance mentoring.
- Iowa – Formed partnerships with state agencies and intermediaries to create targeted pipelines, including a partnership with the Department of Corrections to double the number of apprentices in Iowa’s correction facilities.
- Ohio – Established policies and processes to certify pre-apprenticeship programs to promote quality pre-apprenticeship programs and increase access to Registered Apprenticeships.
